Indonesia’s New Ministry of Finance Regulations to Take Effect on June 6, 2025

Details of the New Rules

Personal Items

For personal items valued over $500, the excess amount will be subject to a 10% import tax, plus a 12% VAT under current tax laws. Income tax is exempt.

Non-Personal Baggage

Previously taxed at Most-Favored-Nation (MFN) import rates, non-personal items carried by travelers will now follow the same tax rules as personal items for amounts exceeding $500.

New Exemptions Clarified

Hajj Pilgrims:

Ordinary pilgrims: Full exemption from import taxes on carried items.
Special pilgrims: Duty-free allowance up to $2,500 per person per entry.

International Competition Awards:

Items received as prizes or honorary awards are fully exempt if the recipient can prove Indonesian citizenship and provide competition/award documentation.
